As per Bhaagavatha puraanam, this place was ruled  by Satrugna, brother of Sri Rama after defeating an asura who used to rule this area by name lavanasura .  It was then called as Madhuvanam. Later, it came to be called as Madhura.
Madhura is the birth place of Sri Krishna. In Dwaapara yugam, this was ruled by Ugrasena King; his son was Kamsa.  Bhagavatha puraana gives detailed account of Sri Krishna's birth in a prison; the child was taken to vraj , kept by the side is Yasoda and her female child was brought by Vasudeva. Krishna was brought up by Nanda and Yasoda.  Kamsa tried his best to kill Krishna; but met his death at the hands of Krishna. This land of Madhura is considered as very pious as Krishna was born and brought up and made Ugrasena as King again after the death of Kamsa, and released his parents, Vasudeva and Devaki from prison. Later,  after King Jaraasandha invaded Madhura for 17 times, Krishna migrated to Dwaaraka , specially constructed at his instance by Devasilpi, Viswakarma.
Madhura is on the banks of River Yamuna. There are as many as 25 bathing ghats; important among them are: visraam, ganesh, dasaaswamedha, varaahakshetra,  gantaagaran, saraswati sangam, krishnaganga, swamighat, vaikuntaghat, doorvaa ghat, chakrateertha, raamghat, suryaghat etc., Visraam ghat  is the main ghat as many pilgrims prefer to bathe in this that only as Krishna is believed to have bathed here after killing Kamsa.  It is also believed that  if bathed here on sukla vidiya in Kaarteeka maasam, pilgrims will get moksham. It is also believed that Yoga that is the place where Kamsa tried to kill Yogamaaya(born to Yasoda). Devotees perform PARIKRAMA(పరిక్రమ)  round Madhura.
Historically,  this was ruled by Maurya kings; Megasnasees in his treatise made a mention of this place. In 1018, MD. Ghajani invaded and destroyed some places;  In 1489-1517, king Sikander Lodi again invaded; In 17th century, Aurangajeeb invaded and destructed the Krishna janma sthalam and constructed a maszid. Devotees can see this maszid and stones constructed prison where Krishna was born side by side. Vallabhaachaarya and Nimbaarka and other vaishnavites started daily poojas as per Paancharaatra Aagamam. Daily at 6 pm, deepaaraadhana is performed on the banks of River Yamuna just it is now being done in Godaavari and Krishna ghats in Rajamandry and Vijayavada respectively.
