STHALA PURAANAM:
Pullaar Maharshi did penance here and Sri Maha Vishnu gave darsan and at his
prayer, Lord resided here along with her two thaayars. That's why this aranyam
was called Pullaar Aranyam. Sri Rama on his way to Sri Lanka stopped here,
worshipped Lord here and sought His help to construct a vaaradhi across the
ocean. Another story is that Devar Maharshi was worshipping here after bathing
in the pushkarini; one day when he went to the pushkarini, seven
devakanyaas were bathing there unmindful of the arrival of the Maharshi.
Annoyed by their indifference, Maharshi cursed them to be in Bhooloka as maanava
kanyaas; when they sought Maharishi's grace, he told they that they will have
sapa vimochanam from Pullaar Maharshi. On the suggestion of Pullaar Maharshi,
they sought saapa vimochanam from Sri Rama when he came to this place. When
they touched Rama's feet, they became devakanyaas. At this place Vibheeshana
came and sought saranaagati from Rama; hence this kshetram is known as
SARANAAGATI KSHETRAM. Brahmostavams are held every year in Chittaarai
month for ten days. No facilities are available here for devotees.

ThangaaL" means place; so this place is where Lakshmidevi did penance for
Mahavishnu. Once when Vishnu was in yoga nidra, there was a discussion
between Lakshmidevi, Bhoodevi and Neeladevi as to who amongst them are great;
Lakshmidevi told them that she is the custodian of wealth and that's why
Vishnu got the name of Sripathi, and Srinivasa. Bhoodevi argued that she
is carrying the entire bhoomandalam providing shelter, food, water etc.,
Neeladevi argued that she is the adhishtaNa devatha for jalam(water) and
without water nobody can survive. Lakshmidevi got angry and did penance at this
kshetram and Vishnu appeared before her and told her that she is very great
amongst all his thaayars. Bhoodevi and NeeLaadevi accepted Lakshmidevi's
greatness. As per prayer of Maharishi's, Vishnu stayed here along with his
thaayars. Another story is that in this place, the marriage of USHA(daughter of
BaaNaasura) and Anirudh( grandson of Srikrishna) was performed. This
temple is on a small hill called as Thangamalai Konda.
MOOLAVAR: Sri Ninra

here, she is in a standing posture with two hands only-- holding abhaya mudra
in one hand and pointing to her feet with the other hand. She is also called as
Anna NaYaki.
THEERTHAM:

the period she did penance here. There are three more THEERTHAMS, called
as Bhaskara, Sanga and Padma theerthams. Opposite Lord's sannidhi is Garuda

LOCATION: This kshetram is in Madhurai city;
it is one and half kms from Meenaakshi Amman temple. This is 10 kms from
Thirumogoor and 20 kms from Thirumalirumsolai divyadesams. All
Maharishi's and all devataas assembled to witness the marriage of MeenaKshi and
Sundareswar; in Tamil, koodal means assembling place. As Maha Vishnu came here,
it is called as Thirukkuudal. Lord is called as Koodal Alagar.
STHALA
PURAANAM: In Vaamana avataaram, when Vaamana measured bhoomandalam and
paataalam with steps(two feet space), and raised his leg towards sky,
Brahma washed His feet with water in his kamandalam; some water fell on the
bhoomandalam and thus water became Kirutamalai river and the area became rich
with different varieties of trees and got the name as KADALIVANAM. When
MahaVishnu came here from Vaikuntam to perform the marriage of MeenaaKshi Amman
and Sundreswar, all the Maharishi's and all the devataas prayed Him to stay
there for their daily worship. Hence this Swamy was called as Koodal
Alagar. This kshetram became very famous as Pallaandu Kshetram. Matsyadhwaja
was ruling this region, he called many pandits to his darbaar and asked
them to suggest an acceptable method to attain moksham. Vishnuchitta gave
his opinion which was very well received by the gathering. Sri Maha Vishnu was
very much pleased with his explanation and came to the darbaar along with
his two thaayaars on Garuda vaahanam; Vishnuchitta felt very haply with the
divine presence of the Lord and recited 12 paasurams known as THIRU Pallaandu.
MOOLAVAR: SRI KOODAL ALAGAR SWAMY . THAAYAARS:

VIMAANAM: Samsana (

STHALA
PURAANAM: This temple was constructed by villi and puttan two
Hunter kings. They discovered the original Sannidhi under the anthills and
reconstructed the same. This is the place of birth of Periyazhwar
(Vishnuchitta)and Andal. Periyazhwar was born in the 47th year of the
current Kaliyugam, Krodhana naama samvatsaram muthuna(Ani masam) sukla
Ekaadasi, Swati nakshatram, Sunday. Goda devi was born in the 93rd year of the
current Kaliyugam in Nala samvatsaram karkataka maasam., poorvaphalgunj
nakshatram,(Adi maasam) on a Tuesday. Vishnuchitta was very devotional
from his childhood. His parents were, Mukundaacharya and padmaiyar(Padmavathi)
Amma. He was named as Ramandar initially. Due to his constant devotion towards
Perumal he was known as vishnuchitta. Vishnuchitta developed a
nandanavanam and used to prepare floral garlands daily and offer them to
Vatapatrasayi Perumal in the temple. Once he found a small child near
a tulasi plant in his floral garden,; he took the baby as vara
prasaadam of vatapatra sayee .This baby was named as Kodai alias Goda.
She was very devotional and listening to MahaVishnu's stories daily narrated by
her father. One day after he prepared the garland, Andal wore it and saw her
image in the well nearby( devotees can see this well even now known as Kannadi
kinaru) and put it in the basket. Her father noticed a hair in the
garland and was very apologetic for the aparaadham. But Vatapatrasayee
told him that He prefers to wear the garlands worn by his daughter Andal
hereafter and that he should not worry.
Andal grew up and
took a vow to marry none other than srimannarayana. Periyazhwar advised her to
do katyayani vratam that was done by gopis to have Krishna as their
husband.
She started margazhi
nonbu along with her friends treating Srivilliputhur as nandagokulam and
Vatapatrasayee as Krishna.
At the conclusion
of the Nonbu, Perumal
Appeared in the
dream of Andal and Periyazhwar and assured them both that he shall marry Andal.
The celestial marriage took place on Panguni uttiram day. Andal was worried
that Perumal may not reach in time from srirangam. She prayed to garudazhwar to
bring Perumal in right time. As per her prayer garudazhwar brought Perumal on
his shoulders in time. As a mark of gratitude she offered garudazhwar ekasanam
instead of standing in front of the Sannidhi.
Here Ranganathar is
called rangamannar meaning Krishna who has come from Srirangam to marry
Andal.
While there was
still some gap for the marriage Andal took another vow to offer akkardisil(
sweet Pongal) and butter to Kallazhagar. She prayed to Azhagar that if he
partakes the offering , she shall offer 108 vessels each of akkaradisil and
butter to Azhagar.
She did not find
time to fulfill her vow as she got merged into the tirumeni of sriranganathar.
After a long gap While listening to Nachiyar tirumozhi pasurams swamy
Ramanuja came to know about this incident and offered 108 vessels each of
Akkaradisl and Butter at Azhagar malai and fulfilled her vow. After that he visited
Srivilliputhur. Andal came to know about this act of Swamy Ramanuja and out of
joy she came out of garbhalayam and welcomed him
Addressing him as
‘en koil annar’ meaning my brother from
Srirangam. This is
the reason we find utsavar of Andal rangamannar and garudazhwar found in
Sukanasi and not in garbhalayam.
From then
onwards swamy ramanuja is called koil annar at Srivilliputhur.
In Midhuna
maasam utsavam, on the fifth day morning, Vishnuchitta does mangalaasaSanam to
Rangmannaar, vatpatrasaYi, KaattaLagar, Srinivasan, and ThangaaLappan. The same
night Andal rides annaikizhi (Hamsa) Vahanam and all the Perumal on Garuda
follow her. Kanyamasam(purattasi) sravanam is teerthotsavam . As is done in
Srirangam, here also Arayar Seva is performed. Sri Paraasara Bhattar has
composed Godha Chatusloki and Sri Vedanta Desikan composed
Godha Sthuthi in praise of Andal. There is ThirumaNNi kolanu to the south of
this temple.
Periyazhwar and
Andal have sung about this divyadesam.

Markandeyan Maharshi. While renovation was going on some time ago Perumal
tirumeni was slightly injured. so, here, daily perumaal is given thirumanjanam
with oil. This oil which flows into a tank cures all diseases. This is one
amongst Ashta Swayam Vyakta Kshetrams. VaaNamaamalai Matt here is famous like
Ahobala Matt and ParakaaLa Matt. First Pontiff of this mutt was disciple of
swamy Manavala mamunigal. When the king of Sindhudesh was cursed by Kusaasana
Maharshi and became a dog, he bathed in this pushkarini here and regained
his earlier body. Oorvasi and Thilottama did penance and became as
Chaamara kanyaas serving Perumaal here. Devotees can see the thirumeni of
Nammaalwar on Sataari. Swarna mudrika of Manavaalamamunigal can
also be seen here by devotees. In tulaamaasam on Mulam star, VaaNamaamalai
Jeyar wears this ring and gives Sripaada theertham to devotees. Other places to

ratham,and Pushpavanam.
